Support for Breastfeeding Families

Browse answers to your top breastfeeding questions, making it easy to access expert guidance in moments.

Important note: Please do not worry about cleaning your home or making sure that your kitchen is sparkling before our appointment. I am coming into your sacred space, and the postpartum period is stressful enough without having to tidy up. I was also a new mother and lived through the postpartum phase, please give yourself grace during this period of adjustment. Just relax and let me do all of the work for our appointment, besides the new patient paperwork, that part is still a necessity.

What services does Milky Waves Lactation Consulting offer?

I provide personalized lactation consultations, breastfeeding education, and emotional support for families. For more information about specific appointment types, and a full list of services, please see the “Services” page.

Can I book a virtual consultation?

Yes, I offer virtual consultations to ensure flexible and accessible support wherever you are. Virtual appointments offer convenient and high quality care. For more complex latching challenges I recommend an in-home appointment.

What should I expect during a consultation?

Upon scheduling an appointment, you will also be sent a “get ready for my appointment” handout that will go over all of your appointment details. During each appointment, we will assess your concerns, provide practical strategies, and answer your questions. At each appointment your care plan is developed based on your unique needs and goals. After each appointment we will be in contact via phone call and secure messaging to ensure continuity of care. This allows us the ability to make small adjustments the care plan as needed. If more in-depth adjustments are needed, or a new concern arises, I recommend a follow-up appointment.

Does my insurance cover this service?

The Affordable Care Act says that insurance companies must provide certain preventive care for breastfeeding women. Unfortunately, there is a gap between how the insurance company interprets that and the coverage that is often provided. After each appointment, we will provide you with a superbill to submit directly to your insurance company for reimbursement. I also direct all of my families to the National Women’s Law Center Toolkit, which covers how to get reimbursement for lactation care and how to talk to your insurance company to provide the highest likelihood of reimbursement.
